Weekly Legislative Update: November 15, 2021

Congressional Schedule: November 15-19, 2021

Floor Action:

The House and Senate are in session this week.

Budget- This week, the House is expected to consider H.R. 5376, the Build Back Better Act, which includes an expanded child tax credit; funding to expand child care access and equity; and up to four weeks of paid family and medical leave.

Military- The Senate may begin consideration of S. 2792, the FY2022 National Defense Authorization Act, which contains provisions relating to military sexual assault and requiring women to register for Selective Service, among other provisions.

Veterans- On Monday, the House will consider several bills, including H.R. 3665, a bill to designate the Jennifer Moreno Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and to support the designation of a component of such medical center in honor of Kathleen Bruyere.

On Tuesday, the House also is scheduled to consider S. 796, the Protecting Moms Who Served Act of 2021.

Mark-Ups:

Health- On Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will mark up several bills, including H.R. 1218, the Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act, and H.R. 5487, the Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education (SHINE) for Autumn Act.

Violence Against Women- On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up several bills, including H.R. 4445, the “Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act of 2021.”

Women’s History- On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee will mark up several bills, including H.R. 3531, a bill to authorize the Women Who Worked on the Home Front Foundation to establish a commemorative work in the District of Columbia and its environs, and for other purposes.

Hearings:

Small Business- On Tuesday, the House Small Business Committee will hold a hearing, “A Discussion with SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman.” Among other issues, the hearing will discuss improving capital access for underrepresented entrepreneurs, such as women-owned small businesses, and addressing the backlog of Women-Owned Small Business Program applications.

Veterans- On Wednesday, the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs will hold a hearing, “Supporting Survivors: Assessing VA’s Military Sexual Trauma Programs.”

Violence Against Women- On Tuesday, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing, “Silenced: How Forced Arbitration Keeps Victims of Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment in the Shadows.”

Military

H. Res. 783—Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM)/Armed Services (11/9/21)—A resolution recognizing military spouses of the United States of America.

Women’s History

H.R. 5922—Rep. G. K. Butterfield (D-NC)/Financial Services (11/9/21)—A bill to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Sarah Keys Evans, and for other purposes.

H.R. 5951—Rep. Michelle Fischbach (R-MN)/Oversight and Reform (11/12/21)—A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 202 2nd Avenue in Oklee, Minnesota, as the “Coya Knutson Post Office.”
