Weekly Legislative Update: May 13, 2024

Congressional Schedule: May 13-17, 2024 

Floor Action: The House and Senate are in session.

Health- On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to consider H.R. 4581, the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act of 2023.  

STEM- On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to consider a Senate amendment to H.R. 3935, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which includes a provision establishing the Bessie Coleman Women in Aviation Advisory Committee to advise the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration on matters and policies related to the recruitment, retention, employment, education, training, career advancement, and well-being of women in the aviation industry. 

Mark-Ups: 

Health- On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation is scheduled to mark up a number of bills, including S. 1570, the Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening Enhancement Act, a bill to require hygienic handling of breast milk and baby formula by security screening personnel of the Transportation Security Administration and personnel of private security companies providing security screening. 

Women’s History- On Wednesday, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks is scheduled to consider S. 4228, a bill to redesignate the Cottonwood Visitor Center at the Joshua Tree National Park as the “Senator Dianne Feinstein Visitor Center.” 

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will mark up a number of bills, including H.R. 5985, a bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 517 Seagaze Drive in Oceanside, California, as the “Charlesetta Reece Allen Post Office Building.”

H.R. 8317—Rep. Gwen Moore(D-WI)/Energy and Commerce (5/8/24)—A bill to provide coverage under the Medicaid program for services provided by doulas and midwives. 

Sports 

S. 2861—Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)/Considered and agreed to (5/8/24)—A bill to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Billie Jean King, an American tennis player, in recognition of a remarkable life devoted to championing equal rights for all, in sports and in society. 

H. Res. 1223—Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY)/Education and the Workforce (5/10/24)—A bill designating October 10, 2024, as “American Girls in Sports Day.”

Veterans 

H.R. 8307—Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX)/Natural Resources (5/8/24)—A bill to provide that the memorial to commemorate the sacrifice and service of the women who worked on the home front to support the efforts of the United States military during World War II may be located on the National Mall. 

H.R. 8347—Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA)/Veterans Affairs (5/10/24)—A bill to direct the Comptroller General of the United States to conduct a study on menopause care furnished by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  

Women’s History 

H.R. 8258—Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA)/Natural Resources (5/6/24)—A bill to redesignate the Cottonwood Visitor Center at Joshua Tree National Park as the “Senator Dianne Feinstein Visitor Center.” 

S. 4272—Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA)/Rules and Administration (5/7/24)—A bill to direct the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain a statue of Shirley Chisholm for placement in the United States Capitol.

H.R. 3354—Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA)/Considered and agreed to (5/7/24)—A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 220 North Hatcher Avenue in Purcellville, Virginia, as the “Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Post Office Building.”
