Weekly Legislative Update: July 8, 2024

Congressional Schedule: July 8-12, 2024 

Floor Action: The House and Senate are in session.  

Abortion- Later this week, the Senate may consider S. 4554, the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act. 

Appropriations- This week, the House is scheduled to consider H.R. 8772, the FY2025 Legislative Branch spending bill, which includes provisions relating to payments to widows of Members of Congress and funding for child care for House employees.  

Education- This week, the House is scheduled to consider H.J. Res. 165, providing for congressional disapproval of the Department of Education rule relating to nondiscrimination on the basis of sex in education programs receiving federal financial assistance.  

Markups: 

Appropriations- On Tuesday, the House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). This measure contains funding for programs to combat violence against women and encourage women to enter STEM-related professions. 
 
On Tuesday, the House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The measure includes funding for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. 
 
On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation contains funding for maternal and child health programs, state child care grants, and women’s health research. 
 
On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). This measure includes funding for housing programs for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to support affordable housing for women with dependents.    
 
Also on Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation includes funding for several domestic and international nutrition assistance programs and FDA user fees.  
 
On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Legislative Branch spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation includes funding for child care for congressional employees. 
 
On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the FY2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation includes funding for several domestic and international nutrition assistance programs and FDA user fees. 
 
Also on Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up H.R. 8580, the FY2025 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies spending bill. The measure contains funding for military family housing and the Veterans Health Administration. 
 
Hearings: 
 
Child Care- On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing, “Examining the State of Child Care: How Federal Policy Solutions Can Support Families, Close Existing Gaps, and Strengthen Economic Growth.” 
 
Human Trafficking- On Tuesday, the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations will hold a hearing, “Examining the 2024 Annual Trafficking in Persons Report: Progress over Politics.”
