On May 25, the House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 5169, the What Works to Move Welfare Recipients into Jobs Act, sponsored by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL).
Among other provisions, the legislation would examine the impact of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program on “employment, self-sufficiency, child well-being, unmarried births, marriage, poverty, economic mobility,” and other factors. In addition, the bill would evaluate grants to improve child well-being, healthy marriage, and responsible fatherhood.
The bill also would establish a database of projects that used proven, promising, developmental, or effective approaches to move individuals from welfare into work.
