Stronger Safety Standards for Child Safety Seats Approved by House Committee

The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved, by voice vote, a bill (H.R. 5504) that would require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to set standards for automobile child restraint systems for children weighing more than 50 pounds. According to Committee Chair Billy Tauzin (R-LA), the bill would require the DOT to develop a crash dummy that simulates a 10-year-old child.

Sponsored by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), the measure was unanimously approved without debate.
