Senate Supports Extension Living Well Week

On February 28, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Res. 67) designating the second week of March 2005 as “Extension Living Well Week.”

Sponsored by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), the resolution contains a number of findings, including:

  • The health and well-being of the family is crucial to the functioning of the nation and to providing adults and youth with the necessary skills and knowledge to help them achieve the best quality of life possible;
  • The National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences is a nationwide educational network through the land-grant universities, funded cooperatively by the Department of Agriculture, state governments, and local, county, city, and parish governments;
  • Extension provides nonbiased, research-based information on food preparation, food safety, nutrition, financial management, and relationship and parenting skills to help adults, youths, families, farms, businesses, and communities; and
  • Extension Family and Consumer Sciences educators advocate for education for families so that they might gain skills for a full and productive life.
