On September 30, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a substitute amendment to a bill (H.R. 2714) that would reauthorize the State Justice Institute. The House approved the measure on March 10 (see The Source, 3/12/04), but must now consider the Senate substitute.
H.R. 2714 would authorize $7 million annually for the State Justice Institute through FY2008. The substitute amendment would reauthorize through 2007 the Bulletproof Vest Partnerships Grant Program, which is set to expire at the end of this year.
In FY2004, Congress allocated $2.3 million for the State Justice Institute. The institute also received $1.2 million from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women for grants to educate judicial personnel about rape and sexual assault.
