Senate Honors Military Children

On April 14, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Con. Res. 27) honoring military children during the “National Month of the Military Child.”

Sponsored by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), the resolution contains a number of findings, including:

  • When deployed away from their permanent duty stations, nearly 40 percent of the members of the Armed Forces have left families with children behind;
  • As of March 31, 2005, approximately one thousand of these children have lost a parent serving in the Armed Forces during the past five years;
  • These children are a source of pride and honor to all Americans, and it is fitting that the nation recognize their contributions and celebrate their spirit; and
  • Observed in April, the “National Month of the Military Child” recognizes military children for their sacrifices and demonstrates the nation’s unconditional support to members of the Armed Forces.
