Senate Forgives Student Loans for Some Teachers

On October 9, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a bill (H.R. 5186) that would increase the amount of loan forgiveness for math, science, and special education teachers who teach for five years or more at schools in low-income areas. Under the bill, the maximum amount of student loans that could be forgiven would increase from $5,000 under current law to $17,500.

The House approved the measure on October 7 (see The Source, 10/8/04). It will now go to the White House for President Bush’s signature.
