Senate Extends Benefits for Women Veterans

On October 9, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a bill (H.R. 3936) to improve veterans’ benefits. The text of S. 2485 as approved by the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee on July 20 (see The Source, 7/23/04) was substituted for the measure.

H.R. 3936 would make permanent the requirement that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provide counseling and treatment to veterans who experienced sexual trauma while in the military, and would authorize the VA to extend these services to members of the reserves who were victims of sexual trauma while on active duty.

The House approved similar provisions that would extend benefits for women veterans last week (see The Source, 10/8/04).
