On June 29, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved, as amended, S. 1312, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, and S. 1311, the Abolish Human Trafficking Act.
S. 1312
Sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the bill would prioritize efforts to end human trafficking. Among other provisions, the legislation would provide technical assistance and training for families, government agencies, and other related organizations to identify and recover victims of child sex trafficking.
S. 1311
Sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the bill would require mandatory restitution for victims of commercial sexual exploitation and would continue efforts to combat sex tourism. Among other provisions, the measure would prohibit federal funds from being used “for the operation of, participation in, or partnership with, any program that involves the provision of funding or resources to an organization that derives profits from the commercial sex trade.”
