On March 25, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a bill (S. 2231) to extend the 1996 welfare reform law (P.L. 104-193) through June 30, 2004. Since its expiration in September 2002, Congress has approved five extensions of the 1996 law. The most recent extension will expire next week.
The House approved a welfare reauthorization bill (H.R. 4) on February 13, 2003 (see The Source, 2/14/03). On September 10, the Senate Finance Committee made a number of changes to the measure (see The Source, 9/12/03).
The Senate is expected to consider H.R. 4 next week.
