On August 1, the Senate passed, by voice vote, H.R. 601, the Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development (READ) Act, as amended. Sponsored by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), the measure would promote programs that improve access to education for women and girls in developing countries.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the bill on May 25 (see The Source, 5/26/17); the bill cleared the House on January 24 (see The Source, 1/27/17).
