Senate Approves Bill to Prevent Prison Rape

On July 21, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a bill (S. 1435) intended to reduce incidents of prison rape. At press time, it was not yet known if the House would consider the legislation before the August recess.

Sponsored by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the bill would provide for the “analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from prison rape.”

The House Judiciary Committee approved, by voice vote, its version of the bill (H.R. 1707) on July 9 (see The Source, 7/11/03).
