Physicians’ Collective Bargaining Bill Approved by House

On June 29, the House voted, 276-136 (with two Members voting present), to approve a bill (H.R. 1304) that would allow health care providers to collectively bargain with health insurers. Sponsored by Rep. Tom Campbell (R-CA), the bill was originally scheduled for floor action several weeks ago, but was pulled at the last minute due to Republican opposition.

An amendment by Rep. Tom Coburn (R-OK) was approved, 213-202 (with one Member voting present), that would prevent doctors from including abortion coverage among the services for which they could collectively bargain with health insurers.

A similar bill has not been introduced in the Senate.
