Panel Approves Federal Marriage Amendment

On November 9, the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Rights approved, 5-4, a constitutional amendment (S. J. Res. 1) that would prohibit same-sex marriage. The panel held a hearing on the amendment last month (see The Source, 10/21/05).

Sponsored by Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO), the Federal Marriage Amendment states, “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”
