House Committee Approves Commerce, Justice, Science Spending Bill

On July 12, the House Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2008 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The Subcommittee approved the bill, also by voice vote, on June 11 (see The Source, 6/15/07).

The bill includes $53.6 billion in discretionary funds for FY2008. Of this amount, the measure would allocate $24 billion to the Justice Department. The Office of Violence Against Women would receive $435 million to address the needs of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission would receive $333 million to reduce the backlog in pending cases.

Additional information will be available when the committee report accompanying the bill is printed.
