House Committee Advances Bill to Reauthorize Nutrition Programs

On July 19, the House Agriculture Committee approved, by voice vote, the Farm Bill Extension Act (H.R. 2419), which would reauthorize the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-171). The House Agriculture Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight, Nutrition and Forestry approved the measure on June 14 (see The Source, 6/15/07).

The bill would reauthorize the Food Stamp Act (P.L. 108-269) through FY2012, add $100 million per year for FY2008 through 2012 for the school lunch program, and extend and expand the Agriculture Department’s Snack program, which provides healthy snacks to students during after-school programs.

In addition, H.R. 2419 would provide $140 million for the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition program; funding for the program would increase to $200 million in FY2012.
