House Approves Stronger Standards for Child Booster Seats

On November 14, the House passed, by unanimous consent, a bill (H.R. 5504) that would require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to set standards for automobile child restraint systems for children weighing more than 50 pounds. According to Committee Chair Billy Tauzin (R-LA), the bill would require the DOT to develop a crash dummy that simulates a 10-year-old child.

Sponsored by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), the measure was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on October 2 (see The Source, 10/4/02).
