On May 11, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved, by voice vote, S. 139, the Rapid DNA Act, and S. 534, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse Act, as amended.
Rapid DNA
Sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the bill would integrate the use of rapid DNA instruments in order to reduce the DNA testing backlog. The House Judiciary Committee approved its version of the bill, H.R. 510, on April 27 (see The Source, 4/28/17).
Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), would require prompt reporting of sexual abuse at facilities under the jurisdiction of amateur sports organizations recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee. The committee held a hearing on S. 534 on March 28 (see The Source, 3/31/17).
