On June 12, the House approved, 411-2, a second resolution (H. Res. 617), sponsored by Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), condemning the abduction of female students by armed militants from the terrorist group known as Boko Haram in northeastern provinces of Nigeria. Both the House and Senate agreed to similar resolutions, H. Res. 573 and S. Res. 433, respectively, in May (see The Source, 5/23/14 and 5/9/14).
H. Res. 617 acknowledges the violence by Boko Haram against women in Nigeria that has continued since the abduction of the school girls and the passage of the initial resolutions and calls on the “Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development [USAID] to continue their support for initiatives that promote the human rights of women and girls in Nigeria.”
