On May 6, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, S. Res. 433, a resolution condemning the abduction of female students by armed militants from the Government Girls Secondary School in Nigeria.
Among other provisions, the resolution, sponsored by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), expresses the Senate’s support for the Nigerian people, “especially the parents and families of the girls abducted.” The measure also “recognizes that every individual, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to pursue an education without fear of discrimination; reaffirms [the Senate’s] commitment to ending discrimination and violence against women and girls, to ensuring the safety and welfare of women and girls, and to pursuing policies that guarantee the basic human rights of women and girls worldwide; [and] recognizes that the empowerment of women is inextricably linked to the potential of countries to generate economic growth, sustainable democracy, and inclusive security.”
