House Reauthorizes State Justice Institute

On October 8, the House approved, by unanimous consent, a Senate amendment to a bill (H.R. 2714) that would reauthorize the State Justice Institute. The House approved the measure on March 10 (see The Source, 3/12/04). The Senate approved the measure on September 30 (see The Source, 10/1/04). It will now go to the White House for President Bush’s signature.

Sponsored by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), H.R. 2714 would authorize $7 million annually for the State Justice Institute through FY2008. The bill also would reauthorize through 2007 the Bulletproof Vest Partnerships Grant Program, which is set to expire at the end of this year.

In FY2004, Congress allocated $2.3 million for the State Justice Institute. The institute also received $1.2 million from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women for grants to educate judicial personnel about rape and sexual assault.
