Senate Designates “American Education Week”

On November 21, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Res. 272) designating the week beginning November 16, 2003, as “American Education Week.” Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) sponsored the resolution.

According to the resolution, “Schools are the backbone of democracy in the United States, providing young people with the tools necessary to maintain the precious values of freedom, civility, and equality.” The resolution states that schools give young people in the United States hope for, and access to, a bright and productive future. The resolution also recognizes the importance of public education and the accomplishments of the many education professionals who contribute to the achievement of students across the United States.
