Senate Designates October as Children’s Internet Safety Month

On October 17, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Res. 338) designating the month of October 2002 as Children’s Internet Safety Month. Sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the resolution acknowledges that while the Internet can be an effective learning tool, it also can expose children to unsolicited violent, obscene, or sexually explicit adult material. The measure recognizes that there is a growing concern to protect children from objectionable material on the Internet and calls for support for parents and guardians “in promoting the creative development of children by encouraging the use of the Internet in a safe, positive manner.”
