Two Human Rights Resolutions Approved by Subcommittee

On July 25, the House International Relations Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights approved, by voice vote, two resolutions pertaining to human rights.

The first resolution (H. Con. Res. 349), sponsored by Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA), condemns the sexual exploitation of children by humanitarian aid workers. The resolution urges the United Nations to conduct an investigation into such exploitation and urges the President to affirm the United States’ commitment to “protecting the well-being and human rights of women and girls.”

The other resolution (H. Con. Res. 351), sponsored by Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), condemns the practice of execution by stoning and calls upon the international community to recognize the practice as a gross violation of human rights. Additionally, the resolution urges the President of Nigeria to suspend a death sentence by stoning imposed on a Nigerian woman.
