On June 6, the House adopted, by voice vote, H.R. 2559, a bill to extend the Higher Education Act (HEA) (P.L. 105-244) to October 31, 2007. The Higher Education Act provides financial assistance including Pell Grants, Stafford and Perkins loans, and campus-based aid to students, colleges, and universities, and governs federally sponsored programs for such institutions.
Previous legislation (P.L.109-292) extended these programs through July 31, 2007. Congress has extended the HEA three times since it expired in 2003.
