Weekly Legislative Update: March 18, 2024

Congressional Schedule: March 18-22, 2024 

Floor Action: The House and Senate are in session. 

Appropriations: This week, the House and Senate are expected to consider legislation including six spending bills: Defense; Financial Services and General Government; Homeland Security; Labor, Health and Human Services, Education; Legislative Branch; and State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. 

Human Trafficking: On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to consider H. Res. 149, a resolution condemning the illegal abduction of children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation. 

Hearings:  

Reproductive Health– 

On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing, “The Continued Assault on Reproductive Freedom in Post-Dobbs America.” 

On Thursday, the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing to consider several bills, including H.R. 3303, Maternal Health for Veterans Act.

H. Con. Res. 97–Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL)/Education and the Workforce (3/12/2024)–A concurrent resolution to recognize the significance of equal pay and the disparity between wages paid to men and women. 

Miscellaneous 
H. Res. 1076–Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)/Oversight and Accountability (3/12/2024)–A resolution to recognize Girl Scouts of the United States of America on its 112th birthday and celebrating its legacy of providing girls with a secure, inclusive space where they can explore their world, build meaningful relationships, and have access to experiences that prepare them for a life of leadership. 

Reproductive Health 
H.R. 7669–Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL)/Judiciary (3/13/2024)–A bill to make states ineligible for funding through the State Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant program if the states prohibit a licensed physician from performing in vitro fertilization for an individual experiencing medical hardship in conceiving a child. 
 
S. Res. 588–Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ)/Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (3/14/2024)–A resolution recognizing March 14, 2024, as “Black Midwives Day”. 

H. Res. 1083–Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI)/Energy and Commerce; Armed Services (3/15/2024)–A resolution to recognize the longstanding and invaluable contributions of Black midwives to maternal and infant health in the United States. 

Violence Against Women 
H.R. 7649–Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL)/Judiciary (3/13/2024)–A bill to provide for the detention, inadmissibility, and removal of aliens who commit sexual assault.
