Weekly Legislative Update: February 26, 2024

Congressional Schedule: February 26-March 1, 2024 

Floor Action: The House and Senate are in session.  

Appropriations– This week, the House and Senate may consider the FY2024 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies; Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies; Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies spending bills. The continuing resolution that covers the four bills will expire on Friday. 

Small Business– On Wednesday, the House is scheduled to consider H.R. 7128, the Women-Owned Small Business Integrity Act of 2024 and H.R. 7105, the Women-Owned Small Business Certification and Opportunity Expansion Act.

Hearings: 

Reproductive Health – On Wednesday, the Senate Budget Committee will hold a hearing to examine reproductive health care. 


Bills Introduced: February 19-23, 2024 

Abortion 
H.R. 7427–Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ)/Ways and Means (2/20/2024)–A bill to clarify the longstanding authority of states to use funds made available under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to fund life-affirming services to empower pregnant women to choose life for their babies instead of abortion. 

International 
H. Res. 1024–Rep. Kim Young (R-CA)/Foreign Affairs (2/20/2024)–A resolution recognizing “World Thinking Day” as an annual celebration where members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), including members of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), champion international friendship and take the opportunity to speak out about issues that affect girls and young women across the globe.  

Tax Policy 
H.R. 7425–Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ)/Ways and Means (2/20/2024)–A bill to provide a deduction for certain newborn expenses.  

Women’s History 
H. Con. Res. 92–Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO)/Judiciary (2/20/2024)–A concurrent resolution to honor the life and abolitionist work of Mary Meachum and recognize the importance of the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing as a part of this nation’s history.
