Weekly Legislative Update: June 20, 2023

Congressional Schedule: June 20-23, 2023

Floor Action: 

The House and Senate are in session this week.

Mark-Ups:

Appropriations- On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to mark up the FY2024 Legislative Branch spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation includes provisions related to funding for child care for congressional employees. 

On Thursday, the House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to consider the FY2024 Defense spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The measure contains funding for military personnel programs, including sexual assault prevention and the Defense Health Program. 

On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the FY2024 Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The legislation includes funding for several domestic and international nutrition assistance programs and FDA user fees. 

Also on Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to mark up the FY2024 Military Construction, VA, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The measure contains funding for military family housing and the Veterans Health Administration. 

Employment- On Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is expected to consider several bills, including S. 728, to provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex, and S. 1664, to allow Americans to earn paid sick time so that they can address their own health needs and the health needs of their families.

International- On Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations is expected to consider a number of bills, including S. Con. Res. 2, which commends the bravery, courage, and resolve of the women and men of Iran demonstrating in more than 133 cities and risking their safety to speak out against the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses. 

Military- On Wednesday, the House Armed Services Committee is expected to consider H.R. 2670, the FY2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  

On Wednesday, the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel is expected to consider its portion of the FY2024 NDAA. The measure contains provisions to address military sexual assault, among other provisions.

Also on Wednesday, the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support will consider its portion of the FY2024 NDAA, which includes provisions for military child development centers.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Senate Armed Services Committee is scheduled to consider S. 822, a bill to terminate the Department of Defense memorandum relating to access to abortions, to prohibit the use of travel and transportation allowances, medical convalescent leave, and administrative absences to travel to obtain abortions, and to begin consideration of the proposed FY2024 NDAA, which is expected to continue on Thursday and Friday.  

Hearings: 

International- On Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing to examine United States and global commitments to combatting human trafficking. 

Women’s History- On Wednesday, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks will hold a hearing on S. 886, a bill to authorize the location of a monument on the National Mall to commemorate and honor the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
