Committee Approved Online Pornography Legislation

The House Commerce Committee on October 5 approved, by voice vote, a resolution (H. Res. 575) dealing with online pornography. The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Virgil Goode (I-VA), would urge U.S. citizens to recognize and support educational programs that make surfing on the Internet safe and fun; support initiatives to educate parents, children, educators, and community leaders about the enormous possibilities and the potential dangers of the Internet; and become informed about the Internet and to support proactive efforts that will provide Internet safety for children.

Prior to approving the resolution, the committee adopted, by voice vote, an amendment that would add language expressing the support of the House for law enforcement officials who are working to protect children while they are online. The amendment was offered by Rep. Gene Green (D-TX).
