On April 29, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies approved, by voice vote, the FY2016 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).
According to the committee summary, the measure would allocate $55.3 billion in discretionary funds for FY2016. This amount is $1.5 billion above FY2015, but $9.7 billion below President Obama’s budget request.
One of the main priorities of the bill is to fund housing programs for low-income and other vulnerable populations. The legislation would provide $42 billion in total funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, an increase of $1 billion above FY2015, but $3 billion below the president’s request. This amount includes $26.8 billion for Section 8 and Indian housing, $353 million over FY2015, but $2 billion below the administration’s request.
Additional information will be made available when the committee releases its report.
