On November 12, Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC) was sworn in, becoming the 103th woman to serve in the 113th Congress. The number includes the three delegates from the District of Columbia, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.
Rep. Adams won a special election on November 4 to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC), who became the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency in August. She also will serve in the 114th Congress when it convenes in January 2015.
Rep. Adams is a former chair of the North Carolina Women’s Legislative Caucus and has served in the North Carolina State House for 20 years. She has focused on women’s health and reproductive rights.
