This week, several women were elected to party leadership positions for the 114th Congress.
Senate Leadership Elections
Senate Democrats re-elected Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) as secretary of the Democratic Conference. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) won reelection to the position of vice chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC). Democratic senators elected Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) as chair of Steering and Outreach within the Democratic Conference and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to a newly created position within the DPCC.
House Leadership Elections
Women will assume five of the ten positions in the Republican leadership. House Republicans re-elected Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), a former co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, as chair of the Republican Conference. Reps. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Virginia Foxx (R-NC) also won re-election to their positions as vice chair and secretary, respectively, of the Republican Conference. Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) will serve as the 2012 class representative and Rep.-elect Mimi Walters (R-CA) will serve as the freshman class representative during the 114th Congress.
House Democrats are expected to hold leadership elections during the week of November 17.
